Former stars of the Pakistan cricket team seem to be making a habit of making controversial remarks. After Kamran Akmal made a controversial and racist 'Sikh' joke on Indian cricket team star Arshdeep Singh, sparking a major controversy, now another former Pakistan player, Ijaz Ahmed, has made an unsavory comment. Ahmed, who played 60 Tests and 250 ODIs for Pakistan, made his comments on the Pathan community in Pakistan. He was talking about Pakistan cricket and the discussion panel also included Akmal. The comments did not go down well with members of the Pakistani cricket community.

“Look at him [Pakistan] Today, 80% of the cricket team has gone to remote areas like KP (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). If you select a team now, 6-8 players are Pathans, who have no education. They wake up in the morning to go and perform namaz with their relatives or brothers and come back, then they never leave their homes after that. When there is pressure on them [during matches]they can’t handle it,” Ijaz Ahmed told ARY News.

This comment sparked a strong reaction from Pakistan. Salman Iqbal, founder and CEO of ARY DIGITAL Network, distanced himself from the remark.

“What was said during the Kashif Abbasi show by Ijaz Ahmed is not acceptable to the leadership of ARY and me personally. I have immense respect for the Pakhtun community and all the communities we have in Pakistan .I think Ijaz Ahmed should apologize to the Pakhtun community over his statement,” he wrote on X.

Former Pakistan player Junaid Khan said: “Ijaz Ahmed should apologise.”

Social media also sparked other strong reactions.

Pakistan's T20 World Cup 2024 campaign is in balance with the team having picked up just one win in three Group A matches so far.
