Miandad’s son Junaid is married to Dawood’s daughter Mahrukh. The couple’s union was celebrated in Dubai in 2005 under unprecedented security cover.

People have a “wrong impression” of Dawood’s family, Miandad added.

“Understanding the real Dawood Ibrahim is not easy. The way people perceive family is not like that,” he remarked.

Of Indian nationality, the mafia boss is a “wanted terrorist” in his native country, where he orchestrated the serial attacks of March 1993 which cost the lives of more than 250 people in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. As the head of “D-company”, an organized crime syndicate he founded in Mumbai in the 1970s, Dawood is said to live in the upscale locality of Clifton in Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city. Pakistan, however, has repeatedly denied that the gangster lived or is living on its soil.

Miandad, on the other hand, played 124 Tests and 233 One Day Internationals (ODIs) for Pakistan, in an international career that spanned almost 20 years (October 1976-March 1996). An extremely prolific batsman, he scored 8,832 runs and 23 centuries in Test cricket, while in ODIs he scored 7,381 runs with eight centuries. His batting average in the two formats was 52 and 41 respectively.

The 66-year-old has also coached the national team three times.
