Aston Villa 2-2 Chelsea, Premier League: Post-match reaction, ratings

Aston Villa I didn't get out of second gear to beat easily lose two points against Chelsea tonight.

They scored in five minutes, then took a nap, then woke up (only after Jackson missed another open field goal) and got a second just before halftime.

The second half was a non-event.

In all honesty, we tried to have a good attempt in the second half, and Madueke even managed to score a goal. Yet he never really felt like Villa were in any real danger of dropping points – even if he barely broke a sweat.

But then a moment of magic from Conor Gallagher, left-footed into the top corner, made Villa pay for their ultimately lackadaisical performance.

And it was almost a most glorious comeback as Palmer had a chance to win it at the end, but couldn't convert… while VAR ruled out Disasi's goal from the resulting corner for a push from Badiashile. I've seen them go both ways.

If only the first half had gone a little better…

  • Three changes compared to Tuesday, with the arrival of Palmer, Silva and Chalobah; plus a bench full of Academy kids (who never really had any hope of featuring anyway, ultimately)
  • Mathematically, we're still not out of European competition yet… but we'll probably have to prevail from here. Five games to go (Spurs H, West Ham H, Forest A, Brighton A, Bournemouth H). Doable – but only if we play like we did in the second half obviously
  • Next meeting: Spurs at home on Thursday
