Babar Azam indirectly mentions Virat Kohli's knock, says Pakistan should have won match against India in World Championship: 'They took it…'

Virat Kohli played a knock for the ages when India last met arch-rivals Pakistan in the T20 World Cup. Kohli played a majestic shot to seal a stunning victory for Rohit Sharma and Co. against Babar Azam's Pakistan at a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2022. In a nerve-wracking final, India outclassed Pakistan in the thriller final. Although India overshadowed Pakistan on the biggest stage, Babar and Co. managed to play the final of the ICC event against the eventual winners – England.

Hoping that Pakistan will remain in good spirits, Babar and Co. will launch their world Cup campaign on the back of poor form. Under Babar's leadership, Pakistan failed to enter the business phase of the World Cup last year. Babar even resigned as captain, although the opening batter was reinstated as white-ball captain months before the 2024 World Cup.

“The terrain was the reason…”

Speaking on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) podcast ahead of his team's World Cup opener, Pakistan skipper Babar recalled the semi-final encounter between the Green Army and Australia. Babar clarified that his team lost the match as a team and not because of individual errors. “I think the semi-final we lost to Australia, we could have won. In that match, the fielding was the reason which had a different impact. If we had bowled two or three dot balls “We beat them, but we lost as a team and not because of any individual,” Babar said.

“We could and should have won the match against India”

Babar also feels that Pakistan should have won their crucial clash against India in the T20 World Cup in 2022. “For me, in 2022 [World Cup]we could and should have won the match against India, but they prevailed,” added Babar. A Kohli song smoked a memorable six off Haris Rauf, which paved the way for commentator Gerard Whateley to qualify the six imposing 'shot of an emperor'. Completing India's successful 160-run chase, former Indian captain Kohli was lifted up by skipper Rohit after the thrilling encounter. Kohli remained unbeaten on 82 off 53 balls in India's four-wicket win over Pakistan.
