Belgian player ratings against Slovakia: Romelu Lukaku is atrocious! Striker's terrible finish lets team down as VAR denies double in stunning Euro 2024 upset

Domenico Tedesco's side were in the lead for much of the match but were repeatedly denied in a huge upset.

Belgium paid the price for their desperate finish as their Euro 2024 campaign got off to a terrible start with a 1-0 defeat to Slovakia on Monday, although they managed to put the ball in the net twice .

Amid Romelu Lukaku's numerous missed chances and Jeremy Doku's promising but unsuccessful dribbles, it was a terribly infuriating evening for the Rode Duivels. They also proved masters of their own downfall when Doku's silly pass into the Belgian box was collected and ended up in the net via an Ivan Schranz shot.

Domenico Tedesco's side pushed for the equalizer, but Doku found himself constantly stranded for much of the match as Lukaku simply couldn't score. When the striker finally put the ball in the net – twice – he was ruled offside by VAR before a second was disallowed for Lois Openda's handball.

Belgium were completely dominant throughout the second half, with over 70% possession for much of it and seven shots over the 45 minutes, but they just couldn't find a way to beat Martin Dubravka without the VAR getting in the way.
