CSK vs RR, IPL 2024: Chennai Super Kings boost playoff hopes with historic triumph over Rajasthan Royals


Chennai Super Kings wrapped up their home engagements in the group stage of the 2024 Indian Premier League season with a 5-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday to move up to third place in the table .

CSK managed to restrict RR to a score of 141 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs as Simarjeet Singh bowled with a three-fer, before chasing down the target in 18.2 overs with 5 wickets to spare as Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. An unbeaten knock of 42 runs saw the hosts clinch victory.

Dhruv Jurel raised the 100-run mark for RR with a stunning maximum on the leg side. He then added 28 runs to Rajasthan's scoreboard before succumbing to Tushar Deshpande, who also managed to dismiss left-hander Shubam Dubey for a golden duck in the very next delivery.

Riyan Parag, who was dropped at 15th over by Maheesh Theekshana, finished unbeaten at 47th at the end of the innings accompanied by hometown boy in opposition colors Ravichandran Ashwin, who added a solitary run in the final over for helping RR post a total of 141 for the loss of half their side.

  • At the other end, Gaikwad's measured innings anchored Chennai's chase as the captain held up his end of the bargain efficiently by negotiating well with the RR bowling attack. Dube seemed to have found his mojo and dispatched Ashwin's deliveries past the billboards three times, a six and two fours, to take CSK to three figures. But the veteran spinner came back at the southpaw by scalping him for 18 runs in his last delivery of the day.

    Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was asked to return to the hut after scoring 5 runs for a field obstruction as impact player Samir Rizvi took his place ahead of his skipper. The young batter took the hosts closer to the finish line with a couple of boundaries that reduced the equation to single digits in terms of runs required.
