DC vs CSK: Rishabh Pant fined Rs 12 Lakh for violating IPL code of conduct

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has been fined Rs 12 lakh for violating the code of conduct during his team’s maiden win of IPL 2024 as they beat defending champions Chennai Super Kings at Vizag on Sunday evening.

Pant, who is playing his first IPL season since 2022, will have to pay the fine after his team maintained a slow over rate against CSK at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium.

“As this was his (Pant’s) team’s first offense of the season under the IPL code of conduct relating to minimum rate offences, Pant was fined Rs 12 lakhs,” read a statement from the IPL.

The penalty will matter little to Pant who played a starring role in DC’s first win of the current season. The DC skipper scored a solid half-century to help his team reach a challenging total of 191/5 against CSK.

DC changed their batting order after starting their campaign with back-to-back losses. Prithvi Shaw was given a game and he opened alongside David Warner, with the duo getting off to an excellent start as they added 93 runs.

Warner scored a quick fifty – 51 off 35 – and his exit was followed by Pant’s entry at no. 3. However, Shaw soon departed on 43, followed by DC losing two more wickets in quick succession, which derailed their charge.

Pant then hit a 32-ball 51, an innings comprising four fours and three sixes and was dismissed in the penultimate over of DC’s innings.

DC’s bowlers then put up a superb defense of the total, reducing CSK to 7/2 in 2.5 overs before the middle order began to repair the damage. Consistent hitting, however, meant the title holders had plenty to chase in the final overs.

The only solace of the evening for CSK fans was witnessing MS Dhoni’s pyrotechnics as he turned back the clock in an entertaining unbeaten innings of 37 off 16 that included four fours and three sixes.
