The deadline to apply for the post of head coach of the Indian men's cricket team ended on Monday, but the BCCI and the first name on its wish list, Gautam Gambhir chose to remain silent on the development. After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL trophy on Sunday, it is only natural that Gambhir's name would gain more prominence. Even though both interested parties have not said anything officially, it seems that the BCCI does not have many quality options at the moment.

It is understood that no notable foreign names have applied for the position, especially after BCCI secretary Jay Shah made it clear that the board was looking for someone who has come through the ranks and knows the national structure.

It can be said with certainty that the main target of the BCCI was Laxman Plumbingthe director of the National Cricket Academy, but the stylish Hyderabadi doesn't seem interested in a full-time position that requires him to be available for 10 months a year.

“The deadline is acceptable, but the BCCI leadership would not mind taking a little more time before taking a decision. At the moment, the team will be busy with the World T20 for most of the month of June. After that, the seniors will be rested from tours to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe where any NCA-based senior coach can accompany the team, so what is the hurry,” a source said. from BCCI to PTI on condition of anonymity.

Moreover, KKR principal owner Shah Rukh Khan shares a deep bond with Gambhir and it is not easy to leave an IPL team that is part of the former Indian opener's identity.

There is another aspect that needs to be looked at seriously: what the senior Indian players, currently in New York, think about whether Gambhir can indeed be Rahul Dravid's replacement.
