Delhi Capitals announce captain for IPL 2024, ‘fearless’ Rishabh Pant returns as DC leader | Cricket

Rishabh Pant was officially announced as captain of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2024 on Tuesday. Pant missed the entire edition of the IPL last year after a horrific car accident in December 2022 left the talented keeper -drummer struggling with multiple injuries. Australian David Warner took charge of DC in Pant’s absence. But with Pant all set to return to the cricket field after almost 15 months of hard work, perseverance, grit and determination, it was obvious that the franchise would return to its original captain.

Speaking on the occasion, DC Chairman and Co-owner Parth Jindal said, “We are delighted to welcome back Rishabh as captain. Courage and fearlessness have always dictated his brand of cricket and, unsurprisingly, even his path to recovery. I look forward to seeing him accompany our team again as we look forward to a new season with renewed passion, vigor and enthusiasm.

Kiran Kumar Grandhi, co-owner of the team, said: “Rishabh worked incredibly hard during one of the most difficult phases of his life. I have no doubt that his teammates will take great inspiration from him as they begin a new season. Captain Rishabh and the team send you our best wishes.

How Rishabh Pant made an early comeback

“The mental strength and belief in him made us give our 100 percent to do the rehabilitation for him,” Thulasi Yuvraj, physiotherapist at the National Cricket Academy, told ‘bcci.tv’.

“The doctors thought it could take up to two years. Once he got to the NCA, it was like a gradual phase for him,” he added.

Pant had tried gymnastics from a young age and it was an asset in his recovery, according to Nishanta Bordoloi, the strength and conditioning coach of NCA.

“One thing is that Rishabh has a background in gymnastics, which has been a really, really big asset for us because there are certain things that come naturally to him,” Bordoloi said. “Whenever he felt like he couldn’t move, he would fall or get back on his feet. It was definitely an added advantage for him.

Delhi Capitals will face Punjab Kings in their first match of IPL 2024 in Chandigarh on March 23.
