Did MS Dhoni's 110m Monstrous Six cost CSK a place in the IPL 2024 playoffs?

First ball of the 20th over. Yash Dayal attempts a yorker towards MS Dhoni but he can't control the wet ball and it turns into a low full toss down the leg side. Dhoni uses his brute strength to throw it high into the Bengaluru night sky for a monstrous 110m six that hits the roof of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium at fine leg.

It all started with Chennai Super Kings needing 35 runs to beat Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their final league match of IPL 2024. However, that didn't matter.

The target in everyone's eyes was 201, which, had it been scored, would have allowed CSK to stay ahead of RCB in the net run rate column despite the defeat and seal their playoff spot.

Six of those 17 runs that the title holders needed were wiped away when Dhoni bowled those first six deliveries from Dayal.

The equation is now a comfortable 11 out of 5.

A wet ball, a slow overplay penalty – RCB desperately needed the friction of the green.

Dhoni's batting six saw the ball land on the roof of the stadium and as it was not recoverable, a replacement ball was used.

So far, so good. RIGHT?

For CSK, no but RCB, yes.

The replacement ball was dry, meaning Dayal was now able to control his deliveries better. And it was the bit of luck that RCB needed that paid off immediately.

“The best thing that happened today was Dhoni hitting the six outside the ground. We were given a new ball which was much better to play with,” Karthik during his dressing room speech.

Dayal then bowled a slower delivery to Dhoni and the former CSK captain pitched it towards the deep backward square leg region where Swapnil Singh was stationed to take the catch, sending the RCB fans into a frenzy.

After conceding a six off the first delivery, Dayal's next five resulted in a massive wicket of Dhoni and a single run and CSK were kept at 191/7 – short of their secondary (or primary) target of 10 points.
