Dissatisfaction over salary details leaked to media, IPL commitment: Why Shane Watson turned down Pakistan coach offer


Australian legend Shane Watson recently dropped out of the race to become the next head coach of the Pakistan men’s team, despite the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) apparently meeting his salary demands.

Apart from Watson, West Indies legend Daren Sammy was also among the candidates PCB considered for the role, but the two-time World Cup-winning captain also opted out since he is already under contract with the board of directors of the Antilles.

According to a news agency report PTIthe PCB held discussions with Watson during the PSL 2024. Watson was hired by Quetta Gladiators as head coach.

“Watson had initially expressed interest and retained certain financial and other conditions to accept the offer,” a source was quoted as saying.

PCB agreed to Watson’s financial demands, but the Australian was reportedly unhappy with the remuneration details leaked to Pakistani media.

The PCB reportedly agreed to an annual fee of $2 million for Watson.

“But after the board more or less agreed to Watson’s financial demands, the Australian was not happy that details of the proposed plan were leaked to Pakistani media and social media,” the statement said. source.

Watson later declined the offer citing previous commitments as a commentator in the IPL and also in the United States major league, as well as wanting to devote more time to his young family in Sydney.

The PCB will now enter into an interim arrangement for the national team to oversee the training camp at Kakul from March 25 to April 8 ahead of the five-match home T20 series against New Zealand from April 14 in Lahore and Rawalpindi.

“A local coaching team as an interim arrangement for the New Zealand camp and series is currently the only option available to the PCB and chairman Mohsin Naqvi will have to make a call after the PSL final on March 18,” the statement said. source.

Naqvi has made it clear that he wants to appoint foreign coaches for the national team on a long-term basis, covering the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States and the Champions Trophy early next year in Pakistan.
