Five candidates to succeed James Anderson

3. Gus Atkinson

While Atkinson is yet to make his Test debut, the 26-year-old remains highly regarded within the England set-up and it is surely only a matter of time before the big right-armer earns his first selection in Test.

England took Atkinson to India as part of their squad for last year's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and the pacer showed glimpses of his form by picking up four wickets in just three appearances against Africa South, the Netherlands and Pakistan.

Atkinson took 20 wickets in five matches for Surrey in last year's National County Championship and made a steady start to this year's campaign with nine scalps in two matches at The Oval last month.

Expect Atkinson to have the chance over the coming months to become England's new spearhead.
