Former Sri Lanka skipper hospitalized after horrific car crash

Former Sri Lanka skipper Lahiru Thirimanne was hospitalized after being involved in a horrific car accident in Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka on Thursday. He was traveling in his car which had a serious head-on collision and he was later taken to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. The exact nature of his injuries is not known but his condition is currently stable. According to reports, there was at least one other passenger with Thirimanne in the car and that person was also being treated in hospital.

Thirimanne was currently playing for New York Strikers in Legends Cricket and the franchise released an official statement regarding the incident.

“We would like to inform you that Lahiru Thirimanne and his family were involved in a minor car accident while visiting the temple. Fortunately, they were admitted to the hospital for observation.”

“Fortunately, after a thorough medical assessment, we can confirm that they are all safe and sound, with no cause for concern. We appreciate everyone’s expression of concern and support during this time. We ask for respect of their privacy during their recovery,” the statement said.

According to, Thirimanne was on a pilgrimage when the accident happened. The car crashed into a truck coming from the other side and was badly damaged in the incident.

Thirimanne played 44 Test matches, 127 ODIs and 26 T20Is in his decade-long career. He was part of three T20 World Cup campaigns, including the triumphant 2014 edition. He retired in July 2023.
