The wait for Indian cricket to find out who the Rahul Dravidthe successor to the head coach of the men's team, will probably end soon, with Gautam Gambhir would be willing to take on this responsibility. Gambhir's name has been making rounds across the Indian cricket spectrum, with his impressive stint as a mentor for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 franchise seeing his shares rise. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also seemed interested in a host of Australian big names, as well as other IPL coaches like Stephen Fleming And Andy Fleurfor the role of head coach of the Indian team, but it is Gambhir who seems to be ahead of the rest.

Gambhir's name started being discussed as KKR produced an emphatic performance in the league stage of IPL 2024, finishing No.1. A few matches later, Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final to win the title. After the final, Gambhir also had a long conversation with BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Although the contents of the chat are not known, visas have fueled speculation.

According to a report from India today, Gambhir is now set to replace Dravid as the head coach of the Indian team. Although Gambhir recently took up the role of KKR's mentor, leaving his post at Lucknow Super Giants, another IPL team which he had joined as a member of the coaching staff in 2022.

Although the former Indian opener has no experience as head coach of a national team, or even IPL, his role in KKR's IPL triumph this year would have been enough for the BCCI to consider seriously his name as Dravid's successor.

The BCCI invited applications for the head coach post before May 27 and reportedly received over 3,000 forms, including fake 'Sachin Tendulkars', 'Narendra Modis' and 'Amit Shahs'. The board will likely be interviewing shortlisted candidates soon, with the Cricket Advisory Committee leading that charge.
