After a loss, it’s a tough time for any team. The same goes for Mumbai Indians, who have started their journey under a new skipper. Hardik Pandya on a losing note. The five-time champions went down to Gujarat Titans, who was Pandya’s former franchise, on Sunday. Since he was appointed skipper in place of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya has come under scrutiny. He himself must have felt the eyeballs following him a little more than in previous years.

After Mumbai Indians lost to Gujarat Titans, the internet has gone into overdrive. A video has gone viral on social media, showing Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah discuss something. After Pandya leaves, Rohit and Bumrah continue talking. This gave rise to intense speculation.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians’ batting coach Kieron Pollard supported Hardik Pandya’s decision to open the bowling in place of Jasprit Bumrah and also said that the skipper who was at number seven in their first IPL match against Gujarat Titans was a “collective decision”.

An inexplicable batting strategy saw MI lose their first match by six runs here on Sunday after seeking victory.

Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bowl first and surprisingly, Hardik opened the bowling against his former team.

“You have to plan and decide what you want to do as a team. Hardik (Pandya) also played with the new ball for Gujarat in the last two years. He swung the new ball and played it well, which was not new to us.

“We tried to use the advantage of the new ball. When I look at the decision made, there is nothing wrong with it and we move on,” Pollard said at the press conference of post-match.

When the discussion turned to the logic behind Hardik coming in to bat at number seven, Pollard said the decision could not be attributed to the skipper.

“No decision is made on full autonomy, so we can’t say it’s his decision. As a team, we have plans; we’re talking about setting entry points for hitters. The upper order hit deep in the game, and we also had two power hitters to go at the back end.

“Usually, if you look over time, Tim (David) has finished games for us, and Hardik has done that over the years.

“So at any time, any one of them can resurrect the situation. That didn’t happen tonight, so there will probably be a discussion about who should have left earlier.

“But all these things are retrospective, and as a team we make decisions, so let’s put an end to the ‘Hardik made a decision, Hardik did this, Hardik did that’. We are a team. We make decisions collectively. one,” said the West Indian.
