Former BCCI chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar has shared his thoughts on India's current squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

With the focus now diverted towards the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 which will be hosted in the West Indies and the United States of America, former Chairman of the Selectors and former India international, Dilip Vengsarkar has shared his thoughts on the Current Indian team expected to take part in the showpiece T20 event.

Vengsarkar was the chief selector from February 2006 to September 2008. He was present at the Mumbai Sports Journalists' Association function held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. He spoke on a wide range of topics as the chief guest and also revealed his thoughts on India's squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

“The current Indian team, I think, is one of the best in the world, I would say. If you could, you know, take out Gill or Rahul or Rinku Singh, I'm sure it's a very strong team. And I wish them all the success. Because I think it’s one of the best in the world right now,” Vengsarkar said.

The exclusion of Rinku Singh in particular sent shockwaves through the cricketing fraternity as he was demoted to the reserves despite an exceptional record in the shortest format.

Vengsarkar further reiterated that in this form of sport, there is a lot of uncertainty that would allow any team on any given day to beat any opposition if things went in their favor.

He commented, “The key players would like to play an important role in this T20 World Cup. It's very difficult to say in this format because everyone is a very important member of the team. But the fact is, as you saw in IPL, the top six was very important. How you get a good start in the top six was very important. And of course, in this format, anything can happen.”

“But I can’t say that X, Y or Z is a key player in the team. In this format, anyone can win the match at any point in the match,” he added.

The Indian team is currently training ahead of their opening clash against Ireland on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York and their quest for silverware continues.
