India vs Indonesia, Thomas Cup 2024: Defending champions finish second after 1-4 loss to Indonesia


Defending champions India lost 1-4 to Indonesia after Dhruv Kapila and Sai Pratheek lost in straight matches to Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, 22-20, 21-11, on Wednesday in Chengdu , in China.

India, after beating England and Thailand in the group stage, have already qualified for the knockout stages, but lost their chance to top Group C to Indonesia after losing the draw.

Earlier, HS Prannoy gave India a positive start after defeating Anthony Ginting 13-21, 21-12, 21-12 to take a 1-0 lead in the competition.

“I knew Ginting was going to be fast in the opening match. But I knew if I stayed with him in the second game until 13, 14, then I had a chance,” Prannoy said after the match, adding that he was always confident when the match was coming up.

But the results since then have all been disappointing with three defeats. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost the men's doubles 22-24, 24-22 and 21-19 to Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, Bagas Maulana while Lakshya Sen finished second in the men's singles against Jonatan Christie with a score of 18-21, 21 -16, 17-21.

In the final match, Kidambhi Srikanth lost 21-19, 22-24, 12-19 to Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo as India finished second in the group and qualified for the last eight.

India will face Group A winners China in the quarter-finals on Thursday. China beat Australia and Canada 5-0 each, while they defeated South Korea 3-2 in their final group stage match on April 30.
