India would be 'top' of Group A even if they finished second in the 2024 T20 World Cup; here is what the ICC rules say

India qualified for the Super 8s after defeating the United States of America on June 12. However, the ranking of Group A is still undecided. No matter if Rohit Sharma's boys finish second, they will still be considered the best team in the group. Find out why.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) grouped the teams into four groups of five for the first round based on their ranking. These rankings will remain the same for the Super 8, so the schedule will not change much even if a team performs poorly.

According to the ICC rankings, the best team in Group A is India. According to the rankings, the next teams are Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and the United States respectively. Even if India finishes second, they will still be considered A1. Even if Pakistan managed to finish at the top of the table, they would still be A2.

USA has 4 points after playing 3 matches while Pakistan has 2 points after playing 3 matches. If the United States loses its next cricket match and Pakistan wins their next match, the Net Run Rate (NRR) will decide the second position. Currently, Pakistan's TNR (+0.191) is better than that of the United States (+0.127).

With India already qualified for the next round, they will face Afghanistan (C2) on June 20. She was scheduled to play against Sri Lanka (D2) on June 22. However, second place in Group D is still wide open while South Africa (D1) is already qualified.

On the other hand, the June 24 meeting with India seems calmer. Australia (B2) has qualified and will play that day against the Men in Blue. While England are B1, they only have 1 point in 2 matches. Scotland have 5 points from 3 matches. If Scotland qualify instead of England, the Scottish team will be considered B1.
