With 18 wickets, Matheesha Pathirana has been the most successful death bowler in IPL 2023 BCCI

Chennai Super Kings’ designated death bowler Matheesha Pathirana will miss the early stages of IPL 2024 due to a hamstring injury. The 21-year-old Sri Lankan slinger was injured during the second T20I against Bangladesh in Sylhet earlier this month, when he was unable to complete his stay.

ESPNcricinfo has learned that Pathirana is likely to be out of action for at least two weeks and will only travel to the IPL after getting clearance from the SLC medical staff. Currently, he is undergoing rehab at the Colombo High Performance Center. With the T20 World Cup set to begin on June 1 in the United States and the Caribbean, just days after the IPL ends, SLC wants to handle Pathirana cautiously. Pathirana is Sri Lanka’s second fast bowler at left-armer Dilshan Madoushankawho was expected to make his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians, excluded of the entire IPL season.

Pathirana’s injury is a blow to CSK, who are already without New Zealand opener Devon Conway, who has been missing sidelined until May with a thumb injury. Pathirana’s economy rate of 8.00 at the death (between 16 and 20 overs) was the best among bowlers who had bowled at least 90 balls during this phase of IPL 2023. It is also became the leading wicket-taker during this phase, with 18 strikes. in 12 rounds.

Pathirana’s absence could potentially open up a place for Bangladesh’s left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman, which also operates upon death. Mustafizur had been suffering from cramps and a stretcher was needed to carry him off the field during the third ODI against Sri Lanka. in the chattogram on March 18. But he has since recovered to join CSK in Chennai and is available for the IPL 2024 opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22. If Chepauk’s fielder is a returner, CSK also has the option of including Moeen Ali. in their team ahead of Mustafizur, alongside Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell and Maheesh Theekshana.

Dwayne Bravo, the bowling coach of CSK, had highlighted the importance of death bowling before the tournament. Shardul Thakur, who returned to CSK after two seasons, is among their options in Pathirana’s absence.

“Death Bowling is my specialty. I believe that in T20, [death overs] is a very important segment of the game,” Bravo had said at an event in Chennai last week. “It requires a lot of skill, courage and planning – from preparation to training to matches, awareness of the match and situations.

“You have to put it into practice and get these guys to believe in the philosophy and work for it. Last year we had the best death-bowling team, and we can’t wait to repeat that… Shardul [Thakur] is also back, which provides more depth. It’s always good to have depth in the team.”

Meanwhile, CSK’s designated hitter Shivam Dubeywho had missed the knockout stages of the Ranji Trophy due to injury, also joined forces with his IPL team after completing his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Defending champions CSK begin their IPL 2024 campaign with back-to-back home matches against Royal Challengers (March 22) and Gujarat Titans (March 26).
