Ruturaj Gaikwad showed insight into why MS Dhoni chose him to succeed him Super Kings of Chennai (CSK) in the second match of the reigning champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday (March 26).

Gaikwad is leading the Super Kings for only the second time in history after taking over the managerial position ahead of the 2024 season following Dhoni’s decision to hand over the baton to him. Dhoni has been the captain of CSK since the inaugural season in 2008 and led them to a record five IPL titles.

CSK attempted a captaincy transition in 2022 with Ravindra Jadeja taking over the position, but the experiment only lasted eight games after a horrible start to the season in which they won only two games. However, Ruturaj looks set to start his tenure with two consecutive victories.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s tactical masterstroke

In CSK’s home clash against GT, Ruturaj’s tactical masterstroke caught the attention of cricket fans. In the home team’s 19th over, Gaikwad was seen telling 20-year-old Sameer Rizvi to come forward to bat as Ravindra Jadeja waited for his turn and retreated completely.

It was after the wicket of Shivam Dube that Rizvi came out to bat in his very first innings in the IPL. The youngster made his CSK debut against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Friday (March 22) in the opening match of the tournament but failed to hit. In IPL 2024, CSK spent a whopping sum of Rs. 1,000. 8.40 crore to acquire his services.

Rashid Khan was bowling in the 19th over, and various cricket experts said Rizvi was a better match for the Afghan star than Jadeja, leading to Ruturaj making the last-second change in the batting order.

Rizvi showed the world what the hype around him was all about by smashing Rashid for a six in his very first ball in the IPL. The Uttar Pradesh star, nicknamed ‘right-hander Suresh Raina’, smashed six more in the process and made a knock of 14 from five balls to help the Super Kings cross the 200-run mark.

CSK ended up with a total of 206 on the board with Shivam Dube making 51 off 23 balls. Earlier, Rachin Ravindra gave the Ruturaj-led side a stunning start with a 46 off 20 balls. MS Dhoni didn’t get a chance to bat.
