IPL 2024: Piyush Chawla takes stock of Suryakumar Yadav’s availability for MI vs RR

Suryakumar Yadav is expected to continue to be unavailable for a few more matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the world’s number one T20 batter is still recovering from a sports hernia operation.

SKY is currently under the observation of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.

Mumbai Indians senior spin bowler Piyush Chawla has confirmed that the five-time champions are still waiting for news from the NCA on Suryakumar Yadav’s status.

“The NCA still needs to take care of it and the coaches know more than us players,” Chawla replied when asked about Suryakumar’s progress.

Earlier, a BCCI source had confirmed to PTI that Suryakumar Yadav is not expected to return anytime soon.

“Surya is making very good progress and very soon he will return to play for MI. However, he may have to sit out for a few more matches, after missing the first two,” a BCCI source said.

With MI missing Yadav, the BCCI doesn’t want to take any chances with the big hitter’s fitness as he is expected to play a huge role in the upcoming T20 World Cup in USA and West Indies in June.

“For the BCCI, the main concern is whether he is on track for the World T20, which he is. Obviously he will play for MI, but after a sports hernia operation he cannot be rushed,” the source said.

The 33-year-old often draws comparisons to retired South African superstar AB de Villiers for his shooting range. He has a superb strike rate of 171.55 in the format.
