IPL 2024 Playoffs Qualification Scenarios Explained: RR Qualify After LSG Defeat; The fight for the remaining 2 places intensifies

Lucknow Super Giants' defeat against Delhi Capitals yesterday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium not only skyrocketed the visitors' chances of qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs but also allowed Rajasthan Royals to becoming the second team after Kolkata Knight Riders to seal a playoff spot. . With six more matches to play, three teams are officially out of the IPL 2024 playoff race while two have sealed theirs in the top 4, bringing the equation down to 2 places up for grabs and 5 teams fighting for that. Here's a look at possible scenarios for qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs and what teams need to do:

Qualification Scenarios for IPL 2024 Playoffs

Horsemen Knights of Calcutta [Q]– KKR have qualified and are leading the IPL 2024 points table with 19 points.

Remaining matches

KKR will now complete the IPL league stages either at the top of the table or second, securing their place in the Qualifiers 1 in Chennai. This means that KKR will have two chances to qualify for the final. If they lose in Qualifier 1, they will move on to Qualifier 2 and wait for the winner of the Eliminator for an extra spot in the final. Their final league match will be against Rajasthan Royals and this match could decide who ends the league stages at the top of the table.

Rajasthan Royals [Q]- RR is currently second in the points standings with 16 points.

Remaining matches

Rajasthan Royals will breathe a sigh of relief after being assured of a playoff berth as Lucknow Super Giants lost to Delhi Capitals yesterday. Apart from KKR, who are already ahead of RR on points, SRH can finish above RR, and CSK and LSG had the opportunity to tie on points with RR. But LSG's defeat means only CSK and SRH can move RR down the points table and RR cannot finish below 4th place. With two more games remaining, RR's focus will shift to secure a top-two finish to seal their spot in Qualifier 1.

Chennai Super Kings – CSK are currently third on the points table with 14 points

Remaining matches

The loss of LSG made the equation clearer for CSK. Win against RCB and confirm a playoff spot. If CSK manages to defeat RCB on Saturday, SRH is the only team who can bring CSK down in the points table and CSK cannot go below 4th place if they have 16 points in their kitty. However, a loss against RCB will make things tricky for CSK. They will stand on 14 points and if their margin of defeat is more than 18 points (if RCB bats first and scores 200 runs), then RCB will overtake CSK in the points table. In this case, CSK will hope that SRH loses their remaining two matches and both CSK and RCB qualify for the playoffs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad – SRH are currently ranked fourth in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points.

Remaining matches

SRH have two games in hand and need a win to seal the third playoff spot. If they manage to win both of their matches, they have a chance to finish top two provided RR loses both of their matches or loses at least one. But that’s not something SRH will focus on at the moment. If SRH loses their remaining two matches and CSK beats RCB or vice versa, SRH will be vulnerable and the final playoff spot could very well be decided based on net run rate. Even though SRH's NRR is much better than its closest competitors, the Pat Cummins-led team would not want to go down that route.

Delhi Capitals: DC is currently ranked fifth in the IPL 2024 points table with 14 points.

Remaining matches

Delhi Capitals' league stage is done and dusted and they finish with 14 points from 14 matches – losing 7 and winning 7. They currently find themselves in 5th place, minutes away from the playoffs, but there is nothing they can do now, apart I hope that other results will follow. They can only hope that RCB loses to CSK, so that RCB doesn't overtake them, and then hope that SRH loses both their matches by big margins, which will push their NRR below that of DC. While the first scenario is still possible, the second is highly unlikely – meaning DC's IPL 2024 campaign is almost over even though it is still mathematically alive.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru – RCB currently occupy the sixth position in the points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

With their fifth straight win, RCB are making a late push for a playoff spot and it now comes down to their final league match against CSK – who are also fighting for the playoff spot. A loss will end RCB's campaign and a win will retain a playoff spot. But for that, RCB would have to beat CSK by more than 18 runs (if they score 200) to get their NRR over CSK. SRH might still surpass RCB, but if SRH loses their remaining matches and doesn't go past 14 points and if RCB beats CSK by the said margin, RCB and CSK can make it to the top 4.

Lucknow Super Giants – LSG are currently seventh in the IPL 2024 points table with 12 points.

Remaining matches

LSG missed a golden opportunity to stay in the thick of the action in the IPL playoff race as their 19-run loss to Delhi Capitals ensured they would not be able to to reach the playoff qualification standard of 16 points. With one game remaining, they can hope to reach 14 points, which would put them level on points with fifth-placed DC. But, due to LSG's low NRR, it is very unlikely that they will be able to surpass DC or RCB, CSK and SRH – all of whom could end with 14 points. LSG's campaign, similar to DC's, is as good as even if they are mathematically alive.

Gujarat Titans – GT are currently ranked 8th in the points table with 11 points.

Remaining matches

After sharing the points in Ahmedabad with KKR due to the abandoned match, GT is officially out of the IPL 2024 playoff race. With one more match to play, GT can only reach 13 points and the 4th The ranked team currently has 14 points, so mathematically, GT cannot finish in the top 4. However, they can spoil SRH's playoff bid by beating them in their last match of IPL 2024.

Mumbai Indians – MI are currently placed at 9th place in the points table with 8 points.

Remaining matches

Mumbai Indians officially become the first team to be eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoff race, and they will look to avoid the wooden spoon this year.

Punjab Kings – PBKS are currently 10th in the points table with 8 points.
