Performances in the ongoing IPL 2024 will definitely play a role in how the Indian team prepares for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

As the deadline for submitting the provisional squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup approaches, there has been intense speculation over who will make or miss the bus. The BCCI selection committee is expected to meet and take note of the team's composition in the coming days and will have the luxury of drawing from a large pool of players to choose from.

While this gives the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel plenty of options to choose from, they can only choose a limited number of players, meaning a few top performers will be disappointed not to see their names among the restricted list.

There is a hot debate over who should open alongside Rohit Sharma at the World Cup, with Virat Kohli being the favorite. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and KL Rahul also have strong claims considering their current IPL form.

Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth, however, feels that the team should go with Kohli as their designated opener given that they need to look at the balance of the playing XI.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal was a strong contender in my team, but from now on, it will be Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who will open the innings for me in the T20 World Cup. Because I will have to look at the balance, who is going to come in at No. 3, who is going to bat at No. 4, what is the impact you want to create, you have to take into account all these things,” Srikkanth said. on Featured sports.

“Sometimes, as chair of the selection committee, you have to face difficult decisions. It will be difficult because Yashasvi is a very good player, his record is good, but for me it will be Rohit and Kohli as openers,” he added.

Srikkanth advised selectors to avoid recency bias and look at players' track record without relying solely on IPL 2024 to select players.

“The IPL, for me, should not be the basis of selection for the T20 World Cup. The IPL is an indicator, let's be very clear. And at the end of the day you will have to understand that a World Cup is a World Cup,” he said.

“It's a mega tournament, and you will have to look at international abilities, whether they can counter and win matches and what their track record is in T20Is. You will have to take into account past performances, current form and fitness. The IPL can be considered, but that should not be the only thing,” he added.
