IPL teams collect players’ passports as precautionary measure ahead of Lok Sabha elections announced

A day before the Election Commission of India (ECI) announces the dates of the next general elections, some actions by Indian Premier League (IPL) stakeholders have given rise to speculation that the T20 league may be moved out of India due to election dates.

A few IPL franchises have collected their players’ passports as a precautionary measure if the second phase of the IPL is moved outside India due to general elections.

However, sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) maintained that the league would be held only in India.

BCCI sources said the franchises collected the passports as a precautionary measure to mitigate any validity issues in case of last-minute changes.

The first leg of the IPL will begin on March 22 with defending champions Chennai Super Kings taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

There were speculations before the start of the event that the 2024 edition of the IPL might be moved outside India due to the general elections, just like in the previous elections. However, the BCCI later announced the schedule for the first leg of IPL 2024.
