As India prepares for the ICC T20 World Cup in June this year in the United States and the Caribbean, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has given his thoughts on the 15-member squad which according to he will be able to bring the coveted trophy home. Pathan was a vital cog in India’s triumphant 2007 campaign, where he won the player of the match award in the final for his all-round exploits under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
The T20 World Cup immediately follows the IPL 2024, providing a perfect platform for players to find their place in the team. Although stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya are automatic picks, some positions are still up for grabs, according to Pathan.

Irfan Pathan insists on choosing Mohsin Khan in the team
Batting remains India’s strength, with Pathan highlighting Kohli’s importance. “Kohli is vital in a big tournament,” Pathan said on ESPNcricinfo’s Timeout show. The big bone of contention is the role of wicketkeeper, with Rishabh Pant returning from a serious injury and Jitesh Sharma impressive but lacking in experience. KL Rahul’s versatility also makes him a contender.
In the bowling department, Pathan stressed the importance of a left-arm pacer. He insisted on choosing Mohsin Khan before Arshdeep Singh. Mohsin has been outstanding for LSG despite injuries. The other seamers he had on his list were the reliable Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
Pathan completes his team with twins Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi, along with the all-round abilities of Ravindra Jadeja.

As per reports, India’s squad for the T20 World Cup will be announced in the last week of April, citing the May 1 deadline set by the organizers. However, teams have the opportunity to make roster changes until May 25. Indian cricketers whose franchises fail to qualify for the IPL 2024 qualifiers will leave for the United States on May 19, forming the initial contingent of the Indian team.
