Kolkata Knight Riders’ home match at Eden Gardens on April 17 is in doubt. They are scheduled to play Rajasthan Royals on that day, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering either moving the match or postponing it to another day. All parties, including franchises, state associations and broadcasters, have been notified.

The uncertainty is due to the Rama Navami festivities. This annual festival is celebrated with fervor across the country, and authorities are unsure whether they will be able to provide adequate security for the IPL match that evening. To further complicate matters, the country is also simultaneously undergoing a general election. In light of these considerations, the BCCI is mulling over the possibility of postponing the match.

It is understood that the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) are in touch with the Kolkata Police. No final decision has been taken but the BCCI has sounded out the two franchises as well as the broadcasters on the likelihood of a possible change in schedule.

The BCCI has prepared the schedule in two phases. Initially, it published the program of the 21 matches, followed by the publication of the dates of the remaining 53 matches after the announcement of the general election dates. The BCCI took meticulous care in maintaining the home-and-away format and consciously refrained from going for the practical option of moving the matches to the UAE to avoid conflicts with election dates.

However, she now finds herself faced with a situation where she may have to change her schedule slightly. A senior IPL official said, “Discussions are on with the police authorities and we will take a decision soon.”

KKR, with two wins from two matches, is currently in Visakhapatnam where they will face Delhi Capitals on April 3. Rajasthan Royals, also with two wins from as many matches, are in Mumbai to take on Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on Monday evening.
