'MS Dhoni will wait for a few months before…': CSK waits for MSD to decide on retirement from IPL

MS Dhoni is expected to make a final decision on his IPL playing career in the coming months, but as of now, even the Chennai Super Kings team management is not sure what their former captain is thinking.

Dhoni is set to turn 43 in July and has now played two full IPL seasons in a row despite fitness issues. Last year, he had a knee problem that restricted his movements and to resolve the problem, he underwent surgery days after CSK won a record fifth IPL title.

Even during IPL 2024, Dhoni reportedly played with constant leg pain, which was also cited as one of the main reasons why he often batted lower down the batting order despite hitting runs at a strike rate over 200.

According to a report from India Timesthe 42-year-old told the CSK management that he would wait for a few months before making a decision.

“Dhoni didn’t tell anyone at CSK that he was resigning. He told the management that he would wait for a few months before taking a final call,” TOI quoted a source as saying.

CSK crashed out of IPL 2024 after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday night, a result that ended their playoff hopes. Dhoni bowled around four overs during the contest and scored 25 runs at a strike rate of 192.31.

Dhoni reportedly “did not feel any discomfort while running between the wickets”.

“We will wait for Dhoni’s communication. He always has the best interests of the team in mind, let’s see what happens,” the report quoted a CSK official as saying.

There are other external factors that could influence Dhoni's decision. A mega auction has been planned ahead of the upcoming IPL season and teams will be asked to retain a certain number of players, meaning CSK will have to make some tough choices.

Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, each team was allowed a maximum retention of four players, of which at most three can be Indian or two foreigners. Reportedly, there is no consensus among the 10 franchises on the retention limit.
