“Mumbai Indians have decided to release Jasprit Bumrah…”: Rohit Sharma’s career-saving act; “Same with Hardik Pandya” | Cricket

First Ravichandran Ashwin, and now Yashasvi Jaiswal. As India celebrate their 4-1 Test series win over England, the stories that prove how incredible Rohit Sharma is as a captain continue to amaze. Rohit as captain is a completely different vibe. He may blurt out controversial words and statements that are caught on the mic, but that doesn’t show how much he supports his players. Ashwin recently revealed how Rohit went out of his way to ensure that the spinner returned home in time to look after his mother, while Jaiswal mentioned how Rohit’s game awareness and players’ support were “at the next level”.

As Rohit Riding the wave of support shown by his players, another incident has arisen that proves how good he is at spotting real and promising talent. Ancient India and Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel recounted an incident about how Rohit didn’t flinch when it came to supporting Jasprit Bumrah And Hardik Pandya in the early stages of their initial loading career. Bumrah, in fact, as Parthiv claims, almost didn’t play a second season with the franchise as MI decided to release him midway through a season, but it was on Rohit’s insistence that they persisted with Bumrah, and the rest, as they say… is history.

“Rohit is always with the players and the biggest examples are Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. Bumrah joined MI in 2014, but when he played his first season in 2015, it didn’t go very well. MI had decided to drop out. Bumrah in the middle of the season, but Rohit felt that he was a solid player and they should keep him. And you saw how from 2016 onwards, Bumrah’s performance reached the next level,” Parthiv said during the Legends Lounge Show on Jio Cinema.

Rohit also supported Pandya

Bumrah actually joined the team in 2013, but after playing 17 matches in the first three seasons, he only had 11 wickets to show for it. But after Rohit’s support, Bumrah had become a completely different beast. He picked up 16 wickets in 14 matches in 2016 and never looked back. Similarly, Rohit showed the same faith in Pandya. After scoring 112 runs and picking 1 wicket in 2015, Hardik made his debut for India, but the 2016 season was not the most promising. But despite scoring just 44 runs and picking three wickets in 11 matches, Hardik had Rohit to watch his back, and from there, he continued to climb the ranks.

“Same with Hardik Pandya. When he joined in 2015 he became very angry, but in 2016 he had a bad season. The problem is when you are an uncapped player, franchises release you quickly and then evaluate a player’s performance in Ranji Trophy or other domestic matches before perhaps resuming them. But Rohit didn’t let that happen. That’s why these guys became the players that they became,” Parthiv mentions.

Ironically, as fate would have it, eight years later, Hardik replaced Rohit as MI captain for IPL 2024.
