'Private conversation with Shah Rukh Khan…': Gautam Gambhir's future with KKR uncertain after outlook for India head coaching role improves

Gautam Gambhir's second stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders may have resulted in instant success for the franchise, but he might only last one season after claiming he was the best candidate to succeed Rahul Dravid as as head coach of the Indian men's cricket team.

Gambhir has been involved in IPL both as a player and as a member of the backroom staff of franchises like Lucknow Super Giants and KKR.

Gambhir was the captain when KKR won their two IPL titles and, in his new role as franchise mentor, saw the team finish top of the table that season and then qualify for the title clash.

Thanks to his success with Lucknow Super Giants (also as a mentor) and KKR, the former Indian opener is projected as the main suitor even though the BCCI is yet to have any formal communication with the two-time Cup winner. world.

According to a report from India TimesGambhir leaving KKR after the success they had under him in IPL 2024 could possibly come down to a “private conversation with Shah Rukh Khan (co-owner), if it comes to that”.

It was Shah Rukh himself who reportedly convinced Gambhir to return to KKR as a mentor ahead of IPL 2024 and the two share a warm relationship.

Many high-profile names have recently been linked with the role of India's head coach, including Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer.

Recently, Ponting had claimed that he had informal discussions for the role during the IPL and that he turned down the prospect due to his lifestyle.

However, BCCI secretary Jay Shah dismissed reports denying that the board had approached any former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer.

“Neither I nor the BCCI have approached a former Australian cricketer with a coaching offer. The information circulating in certain sections of the media is completely false. Finding the right coach for our national team is a meticulous and painstaking process. We focus on identifying individuals who have a deep understanding of the structure of Indian cricket and have progressed through the ranks. It is crucial that our coach has in-depth knowledge of our domestic cricket framework to truly elevate the Indian team to the next level,” Shah said in a statement.
