Revealed: Why Xavi was happy that Barcelona sold Robert Lewandowski

Robert Lewandowski was on a shortlist of players Xavi was happy for Barcelona for sale during the summer transfer window before being fired.

The Poland international was joined by Joao Felix, Vitor Roque, Oriol Romeu and Marcos Alonso on Xavi's shortlist.

Sports newspaper report that Lewandowski's name on the list was one of the reasons why Joan Laporta ultimately decided to part ways with Xavi.

Xavi had decided that Lewandowski was surplus to requirements because he wanted a striker “with more energy and more intensity”, particularly when it came to pressing.

The Barcelona coach also wanted a number 9 who “participates more in the game, creates numerical superiority and helps connect the team collectively.”

Lewandowski's attitude towards the team's younger players also didn't sit well with Xavi, according to Sport.

The coach found the Pole “very distant and serious” with the young players and lacking the “understanding and empathy” necessary for their development.
