Shreyas Iyer’s old issues resurface, fresh doubts over NCA assessment: report | Cricket

India’s star batter, Shreyas Iyer, has been making headlines for reasons on and off the field over the past month. Iyer was dropped from the Indian squad after the second Test in Visakhapatnam against England in February without explanation. This followed his removal from BCCI central contracts; Iyer had complained of back pain after the second Test, but the NCA deemed him fit.

Following his exclusion from the annual contract list, Iyer, adhering to the BCCI’s diktat on players’ participation in the Ranji Trophy, joined the Mumbai team in the domestic first-class tournament. He remained part of the playing XI as Mumbai took on Vidarbha in the final this week.

However, a report from Times of India now states that Iyer has once again developed a returning problem and could potentially miss the start of the Kolkata Knight Riders season. If this is true, it raises a major question: has the Indian batting been forced to return to competition in the Ranji Trophy?

The newspaper reports that the back injury suffered by Iyer resurfaced during his impressive innings of 95 runs in the second innings of the Ranji Trophy final at the Wankhede Stadium. Throughout his 111-ball knock on Tuesday, Iyer had to take a break twice to seek treatment from the Mumbai physiotherapist for back spasms.

However, on the fourth day of the Ranji Trophy final, the 29-year-old was unable to take the field for the entire day. TOI reports that Iyer underwent a back scan at a hospital, indicating the severity of his injury and raising concerns over his future participation in the tournament.

“It’s not looking good. It’s the same back injury that got worse. He is unlikely to take the field on day five of the Ranji Trophy final. He is likely to miss the first matches of the IPL,” the newspaper reported, quoting a source.

He further added that Iyer had also conveyed issues related to his back to the Indian team management during the series against England. “During the recent Test series against England at home, he had informed the Indian team management about this injury which was troubling him again.”

Iyer’s back injury concerns

Shreyas Iyer was forced to miss the entire Indian Premier League season last year due to a back injury. He underwent back surgery in April and was subsequently ruled out of India’s World Test Championship final against Australia.

After spending months on the sidelines undergoing rehabilitation and convalescence, the 29-year-old made his return to the national team during the Asia Cup and eventually featured in the 2023 World Cup as well. Iyer was the third highest points scorer for India in the tournament, with 530 points to his name in 11 matches.
