'Strongest team in T20 World Cup is India': Former England captain impressed by 'incredible depth' of former world champion team

Former England captain Eoin Morgan has called the Indian team the “strongest team” in the 2024 T20 World Cup which begins later this week. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue will begin their campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York (United States of America).

India is placed in Group A with Ireland, the United States, Canada and its arch-rival Pakistan.

Speaking to former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain on Air sport cricketMorgan praised the depth of the Indian team which he believes will pose a massive threat to the opposition they face in the T20I showpiece.

“The strongest team, even with injuries throughout the tournament, is undoubtedly India. Their strength and depth is absolutely incredible right now. And it's almost likely we're talking about the players who were left out of their squad of 15 because of the quality they possess,” Morgan said.

“These are my favorites. I think they are just how good they are on paper. If they produce it, I think they can, they can very well beat anyone in the tournament,” he added.

Meanwhile, Atherton pointed out that India has never won a T20 World Cup after winning the trophy in the inaugural edition, in 2007. He further observed that T20 cricket has evolved in the country after India's title win under the leadership of MS Dhoni and even the inception of the IPL. but the team still has a world title under its belt.

“They haven’t won it since the first World Cup in 2007,” Atherton said. “That's the great irony. It's also an irony because everyone talks about the IPL and how it has improved. Indian T20 cricket. The irony is that the only time they won, that was before the IPL.”
