With Ruturaj Gaikwad take over as captain of the Chennai Super Kings, MS DhoniThe franchise’s leadership reign comes to an end before the start of the IPL 2024 season. Dhoni has decided to relinquish his responsibilities while remaining a player, hoping to remain available for Gaikwad on the field whenever the new captain feels the need for consultation. But, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer thinks the job would have been easier for Gaikwad if Dhoni had left the team completely.

Questioning Dhoni’s timing of stepping down as captain, Jaffer said the move would have made more sense if Dhoni had quit the IPL altogether.

“No, I don’t think so. I think it would have made more sense if MS Dhoni wasn’t there. He had retired and he wasn’t there. It would have made anyone’s life captain a lot easier. Now with MS Dhoni being there, it always makes the job a lot tougher for any captain,” Jaffer said in a chat with ESPNCricinfo.

Jaffer expects a tough time for Gaikwad in the middle when it comes to the decision-making process, wondering if the opening batter would be comfortable with his calls even if Dhoni doesn’t agree with it them.

Therefore, for Jaffer, Thala’s complete absence would have been better for Gaikwad to begin his captaincy at CSK.

“Whether he takes a decision and whether Dhoni accepts it or not. Whether he likes these decisions. And you are alone, and we all know that Ruturaj Gaikwad would have been the successor. But I think if Dhoni was not there it would have been a lot easier,” Jaffer said.

In all likelihood, the IPL 2024 season will be MS Dhoni’s last in the T20 league. The veteran wicket-keeper batter is expected to play a role among the support staff starting next season.
