Uber Cup 2024, India vs Singapore Live Updates: A young Indian women's team effectively secured a place in the knockout stages by beating Singapore on Sunday in a Group A match of the Uber Cup 2024 in Chengdu, China.

Unlike on Saturday, Ashmita Chaliha could not give India a winning start as she lost in straight games to world number 18 Yeo Jia Min in the opening match. Priya Konjengbam – Shruti Mishra, however, registered a back-to-back win to bring India back level. The impressive Isharani Baruah made it two wins out of two after that, defeating Insyirah Khan in straight matches. Simran Singhi – Ritika Thaker then closed the tie by winning the second doubles match. Anmol Kharb then completely completed the formality with another victory in a 5th team match, a sort of habit for her now.

India's place in the quarter-finals will be confirmed if and when top favorites China beat Canada later today.

India kicked off their Uber Cup campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Canada in the Group A encounter, led by Ashmita Chaliha's surprise victory over Canadian Michelle Li, ranked 28 places above her . National champions Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra then doubled India's lead, before Isharani Baruah grabbed the tie. Simran Singhi and Ritika Thaker lost the second doubles match, but rising star Anmol Kharb sealed a 4-1 victory.

Uber Cup: Isharani Baruah, with a jump smash in the Akane Yamaguchi mold, is pure joy to watch

Uber Cup Isharani Baruah in action at Guwahati Masters 2023

Tumble jumping mixed with clear jumps slowly gentrify Isharani Baruah's wild, untamed, carefree free jump smash. Big cities like Bangalore tend to do this, but perhaps the dashing teenager from Dibrugarh in Assam needs the sophistication of mixing quick drops and half smashes and clearances with the dizzying overhead smash, to sustain his badminton.

Isharani opened with a comfortable straight-sets victory over Canada playing the second singles of the Uber Cup where India fielded an unresponsive group of girls – no women yet – in the absence of PV Sindhu, who is removed. (Read more about Shivani Naik)
