'We had it in our hands but…': Sanju Samson reflects on 20-run loss to Delhi Capitals

It was a tough defeat for RR skipper Sanju Samson against Delhi Capitals, who suffered a 20-run defeat at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.

The RR captain was in ridiculous touch with the bat and looked to almost single-handedly steer the 222 chase in favor of the Royals. But the captain's innings was cut short by a century and the batting unit subsequently fell apart.

Speaking during the post-match presentation, Sanju gave his first reaction to the defeat where he thought the game was in their hands but not being able to cross the line is something that happens in the IPL .

“I think we had it in our hands, it was 11-12 runs per over, it was achievable, but these things happen in IPL,” the RR skipper said.

Interestingly, Samson had chosen to bat first against DC in a venue where the team batting first has won every game this season. When asked about this decision, Sanju felt that the conditions demanded that they continue, but admitted that they had given a few extra points.

The wicketkeeper-batsman said: “Yes, we are doing both things well, we would like to stick to what the conditions demand, 220 was another 10 runs to chase, and if we had conceded a few boundaries in less, we would have made it through.”

“The DC opener (Fraser McGurk) came out and did what he had been doing throughout the tournament, we still came back strong,” Samson added.

This makes it the third defeat for the Royals who have been quite dominant throughout the season, but Sanju feels his team needs to fill the gaps in their armor and come back stronger.

He said: “We lost three games, but all those games were close, we played remarkably well, we need to refine and come back, we need to keep the momentum going.”
